Kristin Armstrong crashes in Boise; Olympic hopes up in air

Bad news from Boise last night: Hometown favorite Kristin Armstrong broke her collarbone when she crashed in the Exergy Tour prologue.

After climbing back on the bike and finishing the time trial, the 38-year-old cyclist abandoned the five-day women’s bike race and sought treatment.

The crash and recovery time jeopardizes her plans to defend her Olympic Gold Medal in the time trial competition in the Summer Games in London.

USA Cycling makes its selections for the team on June 15, and the women’s Olympic time trial event is August 1 in London.

We wish her a fast recovery.

Meanwhile, Canadian Tara Whitten won the opening time trial of the Exergy Tour that ends Monday. She’s a member of Team TIBCO, which lost all of its bicycles in a theft Tuesday night. All those bicycles were recovered by Wednesday afternoon.

The Exergy Tour takes a 76-mile route through the Idaho wine country on Friday’s Stage 1. See race reports and stage details at the Exergy Tour website.

Live coverage is available at the Exergy Tour TourTracker.
