Raising money for AIDS/HIV treatment on STP bike ride

Folks who ride their in the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic do so for many reasons — bragging rights, setting a personal best or simply experiencing an iconic Northwest cycling event.

But some use the 204-mile bike ride — in one or two days — as a fund-raising challenge for their favorite charity.

This year, the Cascade AIDS Project is forming a group — Team Ride4CAP — to train and ride STP together as they raise money for the Oregon/southwest Washington-based AIDS service organization.

Registration

Registration to Ride4CAP is $200 and includes a cycling jersey.
Cyclists who raise $1,000 or more receive food, lodging, and safety supports during STP and
transportation to Seattle.

CAP staff members Benjamin Gerritz is leading the training rides. He hopes for 100 Ride4CAP cyclists to sign up.


“Training rides are perfect for building stamina but they also build community. How cool will it be to have 100 riders, some of whom are HIV positive, riding with the CAP logo on their jerseys in an effort to beat HIV/AIDS. As an HIV positive cyclist, I want to break the stigma of the disease and you can bet I will be talking-up the ride before and during the process.”

Upcoming training rides, starting in Portland, are scheduled for this Sunday, Feb. 26 and March 4. See the website for details.

Filling up

STP is July 14-15, 2012. As of Thursday, 86% of the 10,000 spots already were filled.

The Cascade Bicycle Club encourages groups to use its various rides throughout the year for cause fund-raising, but they attach a few rules. You can read the caveats for individuals or charitable organizations at “Riding for Charity?”
