When David Jones set out at age 55 on a cross-country bicycle tour in 2010, he admits that he had no idea what he was getting into.
A frequent jogger, Jones found that long-distance bicycle touring required a whole different skill set.
Older and wiser, the Vancouver, Wash., man plans to set off on a 12,000-mile around the perimeter of the US starting this spring on his Rolling Across America bike tour.
His goal is to raise $100,000 for Share, a nonprofit that serves the homeless and hungry in Clark County, Washington. He also intends to shoot video and conduct interviews for a documentary film about the America he sees from his bicycle saddle.
Cross-country
Jones was a board member of Share when he took off on his cross-country bicycle tour in 2010, leaving from Astoria, Oregon. He intended to raise awareness for the group on that tour. After the bike tour, he told The Columbian newspaper:
“Middle America is dying. I’d ride through town, and Main Street would virtually be shuttered up. I read small-town papers, and social agencies were being closed, or their funding was cut so deeply they can’t operate.”
He hopes to tell that story in his blog and video diary on his perimeter bike travels.
Clockwise tour
Jones plans to leave home on May 19 and begin his bicycle travels across the northern tier of states on a clockwise tour of the lower 48. He expects the trip will take 12 months.
In a press release, Jones writes:
“I do not intend to profit significantly from this endeavor. Sponsors who decide to provide cash can be assured that their money will go to supporting the journey or will be channeled to charity. Although the primary charity I intend to support is Share, a non‐profit organization that serves the homeless and hungry in Clark County Wash, some money may be channeled to local charities that serve a similar cause as I become aware of them on the trip.”
