At least 24 Cranksgiving bicycle food drives are coming up and most are taking place this final weekend before Thanksgiving.
Four of the Cranksgiving bike rides are scheduled this weekend in Washington — Olympia, Seattle and Sequim (email) on Saturday, and Bellingham on Sunday.
In all, 36 Cranksgiving food drives were on tap this month, according to a list at New York City's Cranksgiving, the oldest food drive ride now in its 13th year.
Most are alley-cat style rides in which participants toward the finish while stopping at a required number food stores to pick up groceries. The Seattle ride gives prizes to the first to finish, the most food hauled, families and best costume.
Organizers are telling folks to dress warmly for the rides this weekend. If the weather is bad, that makes the ride all the more awesome.
(For western Washington, the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s on Friday night into Saturday morning, with the possibility of light snow in places overnight and slick roads.)
Also, Cranksgiving cyclists should carry panniers or a backpack to carry their purchases and a bike lock to keep their ride safe while they run in and out of stores. Expect to spend $4 to $20.
