The umbrella — elemental rain protection on a bicycle

No high-tech rain repellent clothing system for this bicyclist. A simple umbrella will do.

I passed him on the way back from a bike ride up the Cedar River Trail to enjoy the fall colors, look out for sockeye salmon in the river, and check out the new Cedar to Green River Trail extension.

Earlier this summer, a cyclist on Biking Across Kansas boasted to me that he had the perfect rain-repellent covering — his skin. That may work fine in June in Kansas, but I bet he'd find something a little warmer for these cold Pacific Northwest autumn rainfalls.

Weather Underground calls for rain Friday, partly cloudy on Saturday, then rain again Sunday. Expect partly cloudy weather, with temperatures in the low 50s, if you're heading out on your bike on Halloween.

By the way, I stumbled across a long-range winter forecast for the Pacific Northwest in a winter weather forecast at Unofficial Networks. Read it and weep:

“We expect the Pacific Northwest region to experience a very severe winter and the Cascades snowpack is likely to see increased levels due to the negative (cold) phase of PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation).”

Talking about rain gear makes brings to mind the local wisdom about riding in the Northwest. It goes something like, “There's no bad weather, just bad clothing.”

Here's something that Joshua Tack wrote about bike touring in rainy weather for the Adventure Cycling Association blog: “Keeping Dry While Touring.”
