It’s a bike; it’s a sperm; it’s Sperm Bank Bike

Urban cargo bikes come in all shapes and sizes, but this is certainly a first as it looks all the world like a giant sperm.

That’s intentional. The bike pictured here carries frozen sperm from the European Sperm Bank in Copenhagen to fertility clinics around town.

And now Seattle has it’s own version of the sperm bank bike that makes deliveries from European Sperm Bank’s Seattle lab north of University of Washington to fertility clinics on First Hill.

Fully loaded, the 10-foot-long bike weighs 110 pounds. Most of the weight is the bike itself and the white tank filled with liquid nitrogen. The cargo, carried in vials inside the cooler, contribute very little weight.

For Seattle, the Bullitt cargo bike has a small electric assist motor boost the rider uphill, says a press release.

I suppose you can call it a charity bike, because it carries donations. In that regard, the fertility clinic director told the PI and ABCNews that he hopes the sperm bank bike helps spread the word about the need for sperm donors.

Donors might not be the right term, however, as the clinic pays $60 for a viable sample.
