Full calendar of bicycle rides on West Coast this fall

Although summer is behind us here in the Pacific Northwest, potentially some of the year's best bike riding is still ahead.

Every weekend in September is chock full of recreational cycling events in Washington and Oregon. Most are charity bike rides that raise funds for a worthy cause.

Twenty-one bike rides are listed at the Washington Bike Ride Calendar for September. The Oregon calendar has rides every weekend and the California calendar lists nearly a dozen.

The Washington slate includes the popular MS 150 charity bike ride for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and the Trek Tri Island for the American Lung Association.

The Cascade Bicycle Club has two rides — the High Pass Challenge on Sept. 11 and the Kitsap Color Classic on Sept. 25.

The High Pass Challenge, now in its fifth year, starts in Packwood and travels low-traffic forest service roads in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. It gains 7,500 feet of elevation over 114 miles, so it's for the serious roadie.

The 19th annual Kitsap Color Classic is easier, although there is a little climbing in places. Cyclists can register in advance or at the ride in either Edmonds on the east side of Puget Sound, or Kingston on the western shore.
