Tacoma, Washington-native Tejay Van Garderen is heading over to BMC Racing, the team of Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and America's George Hincapie for next season.
Van Garderen had to find a new home after his HTC-Highroad cycling team announced it would disband at the end of the year because it couldn't find a sponsor.
In making the announcement, BMC General Manager Jim Ochowicz said:
“Tejay is a gifted young talent with a complete set of skills that will
allow him to one day be a contender in the Grand Tours. His time
trialing continues to improve, as is his climbing. With Cadel (Evans)
acting as his mentor, the road to success should come quickly.”
Jerseys
The 23-year-old cyclist made a name for himself at several races this year.
He wore the King of the Mountains jersey for one stage at the Tour de France and also was named the most aggressive rider for Stage 8. He earned the “Best Young Rider” jersey at the Amgen Tour of California in May and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge this past week in Colorado, where he finished in 3rd place overall. He won the Stage 3 individual time trial at the Tour of Utah on his 23rd birthday.
Although he was born in Tacoma, Van Garderen grew up in Bozeman, Montana. He lives in Lucca, Tuscany during the racing season.
BMC Racing also announced that it had signed veteran Marco Pinotti, 35, of Italy.
