Update: July 25, 2011 — Kirkland police identified the bicyclist killed on Friday as John Przychodzen, 49, of Connecticut. Police are continuing the investigation. His obituary said he moved to Kirkland about 8 months before the crash.
An as-yet unidentified bicyclist was struck from behind and killed by an 18-year-old driving a pickup truck in Kirkland on Friday afternoon.
The crash happened at 3:45 p.m. as the bicyclist was heading north on the 8600 block of Juanita Drive, an arterial road through the area and a popular route for cyclists on the Lake Washington Loop.
There is no bike lane through this stretch. There is a wide shoulder, although cars are often parked there.
The man, described in his 40s or 50s, was reportedly not carrying any identification. First responders tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.
Police investigating the crash said there was nothing to show the motorist was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or using his cellphone. He hit a telephone pole after the collision.
Commenters at the Seattle Times note that motorists frequently cut the corner where the crash happened, although it's uncertain whether that was a factor in this fatality.
