It will still be snail mail, but it will have the illusion of speed when the U.S. Postal Service releases four bicycling themed stamps in 2012.
The post office says it chose the bicycle because it's one of the nation's most popular outdoor activities.
A press release reminds us that the Postal Service delivers mail by bicycle in locations throughout Arizona and Florida. That same press release doesn't remind us that it once sponsored a professional bicycle racing team that won six Tours de France.
Actually, the Postal Service announced five different postage stamps themes this week. You can vote for your favorite at the USPS Stamps page at Facebook. Your choices are the Cherry Blossom Festival, Ebony and Jet publisher John H. Johnson, author Edgar Rice Burroughs and something called “Love Ribbons.”
The first thing I noticed is that the stamps do not carry a price. That's because they're “Forever Stamps,” which are purchased at the current 1st Class rate for a one-ounce letter but are sufficient for use regardless of how future rates may climb.
The stamps were designed by art director Phil Jordan using illustrations by John Mattos.
There's more about the stamps at the US Postal Service stamp preview page.
