Fresh from his hard work for Team RadioShack at the Amgen Tour of California, Matthew Busche won the national road race on Sunday in a photo finish against George Hincapie (BMC Racing).
Earlier, David Zabriskie (left) pedaled to a time trial victory on Saturday at the USA Cycling Pro Road Championships held this weekend in Greenville, SC.
Road race
Busche and Hincapie were part of a four-man breakaway that survived in front of the 112-mile course around Greenville that included four climbs over Paris Mountain.
Hincapie, 37, lives in Greenville and was clearly the hometown favorite, according to reports. He's a three-time winner of the road race nationals. His last victory was in 2006.
But he lost to 26-year-old Busche on Sunday in a photo finish sprint.
The second-year pro gained recognition most recently at the Tour of California as the domestique who set a blistering pace on Stage 7, the climb up Mount Baldy. Eventual winner Chris Horner credited Busche with wearing down his rivals.
It marks the sixth time in his career that he's won the pro National Time Trial championship, dating back to his first in 2004.
Ben King (RadioShack) was on hand to defend his title this year but was not a factor in the finish. In addition to Busche and Hincapie, Ted King (Liquigas) and Tejay Van Garderen (HTC-Highroad) finished in front of the chase group.
Time trial
Zabriskie's specialty is the individual time trial. Currently a member of Garmin-Cervelo, he set the course record at Solvang in Stage 6 of the Tour of California a couple of weeks ago.
At Saturday's race, he beat defending champion Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) by 1:50. Tom Zirbel (Jamis/Sutter Home) finished in second place, 31 seconds behind Zabriskie. (Official results.)
Zabriskie also founded the Yield to Life bike safety organization and developed the DZNuts chamois creme product.
Frank Steele shot some photos from the individual time trials on Saturday.
