The surf's up for 2011 Cycle Oregon as the week-long bicycle tour pays a visit to the Pacific Coast for a couple of days on its Sept. 10-17 loop route around the southwestern part of the state.
Organizers announced the route Tuesday night and immediately began taking registrations in-person and online for the 2,200 alloted spots. The 2010 bicycle tour sold out in less than a week.
Registration also opened up for the weekend ride, which is scheduled July 15-17 and based on the campus of Willamette University in Salem. About 1,700 cyclists are expected to show up for those rides.
Loop route
It's hard to believe, but the 24th annual week-long bicycle tour will be stopping at host towns never before visited for the ride, and 90% of the route has never been pedaled in the ride's history.
The ride starts and ends in Sutherlin with overnights stays in Cottage Grove, Reedsport, Bandon, Powers and Riddle.
Cyclists will hit the ocean at the end of the second day after climbing the forested coastal range. Days 3 and 4 are spent cycling along the coast, with the opportunity to visit Shore Acres State Park and Cape Blanco as well as oceanfront towns.
The bike route heads inland on the way back to Sutherlin on the last three days, tackling the major climb of the week halfway between Powers and Riddle on Day 6.
Registration and services
All food is provided and the ride is completely sagged; for an extra charge they'll even set up your tent at the end of the day.
Cycle Oregon registration is available online. The Cycle Oregon website has lots of information and most of your questions can probably be answered there.
The participants in the 2010 Cycle Oregon came from 45 states and 7 foreign countries.
