Bicyclists are usually the victims in stories involving dogs, as they're either getting chased or bitten by loose canines.
Here's a story about a bicyclist who helped rescue a lost dog, which is why Bill Myers is considered a hero among some people around Carlisle, Pennsylvania, these days.
Search
The part-German shepherd, named Daisy Mae (at left), had escaped into the cold farm country from a vehicle a week earlier. She was being transported from her home in West Virginia to a rescue shelter in New Jersey after her owners had to move and could no longer care for her.
Animal lovers scoured the countryside around the Pennsylvania Turnpike for days looking for her as temperatures dropped to 10 degrees and 5 inches of snow fell.
They posted “Lost Dog” signs and even launched the “Help Find Daisy Mae” Facebook page. She'd been spotted a few times, but escaped before rescuers could arrive.
Bike ride
A few days after that snowstorm, Myers of New Kingstown headed out on one of his regular bike rides. Biking along, he spotted a dog on a bridge that crosses the Penn Turnpike. He saw the dog on the way home, but it ran and almost got hit by traffic when he approached it.
He later told The Sentinel:
“I thought about calling 911 at that point, but I wasn't sure if I could do that. When I came back home that evening, my partner here said she saw a yellow flyer about a dog being lost in the area. I eventually called that number on the flyer.”
Rescue
That was the tip that led to her rescue. A couple of volunteers located her in the area the next day and captured her. She was healthy, but had lost 6 pounds
Suzan French says in an email:
“Myers is considered a hero by the hundreds of volunteers involved in the search for Daisy Mae.”
Right now Daisy Mae is living in a foster home. Applications are being taken for her adoption by 2nd Chance for Life Rescue.
