A series of signs warning motorists to be more aware while driving is a nice holiday gift for bicyclists and pedestrians in Tacoma, Washington.
The safe-driving campaign — Drive Nice, Tacoma — is sponsored by the City of Tacoma and Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. It was paid for by the Washington State Department of Health.
The city says that bumper stickers and postcards will soon be available, and ads will be visible on the LINK light rail, Pierce Transit buses and transit shelters.
In addition to the “Don't Disappoint…” poster at left, another shows a car following a bicycle and says, “Keep a long distance relationship.”
Among the other posters and slogans reported at the Tacoma News Tribune:
— Don't honk at or harass pedestrians or cyclists
— Look for bicyclists before you open your car door.
— Before you turn, yield to bicyclists and pedestrians.
Another poster shows a pedestrian stick figure getting hit by a car and reads: “Pedestrians are not hood ornaments.”
Diane Wiatr, mobility coordinator/urban planner for the city, told the newspaper that they were looking for a tone that was humorous, rather than preachy.
While I really can't see anything too funny about someone getting hit by a car, I appreciate the effort.
The campaign was designed by Rusty George Creative.
