If you're looking for the best bicycle-themed holiday display this year you might need to go to Australia.
A shopping area in Sydney has created a 23-foot Christmas tree fashioned out of 100 recycled bicycles.
Built by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, the tree (more pictures at The Rock's webpage) was assembled from bicycles collected by the CMA Recycling. It took about eight weeks to design and build.
Sydney's tree has been made from recycled chairs in 2008 and green bottles in 2009. This year, the bicycle frames were painted a bright green, while the wheel rims got splashed with ornamental colors. The tree is lit with colored lights at night.
When Christmas is over, this tree will come down with all the rest and CMA Recycling will recycle them again. It sounds to me like a perfect time for Sydney to launch a green-bicycle bike loan program.
This isn't the only holiday display made from leftover bicycle stuff.
In Salem, Massachusetts, the staff of Salem Cycle fashioned a menorah out of cardboard from a bicycle box and wrapped it in foil. Orange safety flags represent the lit candles.
And residents of Morristown, N.J., were to learn how to make tree ornaments from small, recycled bicycle parts at a holiday event on the Green on Satuday. Marty's Reliable Cycles owner Marty Epstein said old, degreased gear cogs will be used.
