If you're interested in the future direction of the Seattle-based Cascade Bicycle Club, you might want to attend the Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday.
Board members of the 13,000-member club have been on the hot seat since the firing, and subsequent rehiring on an interim basis, of executive director Chuck Ayers.
A petition to recall the board has been put forward by a group called Bike Club Rescue Squad, which has a website by the same name. They're saying the bylaws for nominating board candidates were ignored, and the election should be put off until the rules can be followed.
As the Cascade Bicycle Club celebrates its 40th anniversary, a lot has been written on blogs, forums and in the online press in the wake of the Ayers controversy about how strident the club should be in its advocacy efforts. That will certainly be an issue on Thursday night.
The Annual Membership Meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at REI-Seattle. The Cascade blog says that doors open at 5:30, so if you want to get a seat, get there early.
Program area reports, financial reports, and membership reports will be presented, as will a strategic plan overview and a Q&A session.
Members can submit their ballots in the board election at the meeting.
Further, Bike Club Rescue Squad will be collecting signatures at the meeting to recall the board. See the recall petition here.
