The route for the 2011 Tour de France was announced Oct. 19, 2010, in Paris. The 98th edition of the race starts in Passage du Gois La Barre-de-Monts in eastern France and continues in a counter clockwise direction to Paris. The 21-stage race is 3,471 kilometers (2,152 miles) and rolls out between July 2 and July 24.
The 2011 route pays special attention to the Alps in 2011 to mark the race's first visit there 100 years ago.
