US cyclist Taylor Phinney added the under-23 world time trial title to his resume on Wednesday, less than two weeks after winning the USA Cycling pro time trial championship in Greenville, SC.

The 20-year-old Trek-Livestrong development team cyclist won the 19.7-mile time trial gold medal in Geelong, Australia, by 1.9 seconds over Australia's Luke Durbridge.

Later, Emma Pooley of Great Britain won the women's time trial gold medal by 15 seconds over Judit Arndt of Germany. US cyclist Amber Neben finished just out of medal contention in 4th place.

Amazingly, 52-year-old Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli of France finished in 5th place.

Phinney

Phinney's victory earlier in the day was a relatively huge winning margin compared to his .14-second margin of victory over Levi Leipheimer in the Nationals on Sept. 18.

Although a member of the Lance Armstrong-owned Trek-Livestrong development cycling team, Phinney is moving over to race for BMC Cycling next season with George Hincapie, Cadel Evans among others.

Durbridge was the 7th cyclist to compete and faced some wet conditions on the course. Reports say the course had dried off by the time Phinney rode.

Two other US cyclists finished in 15th (Andrew Talansky, 2:21 behind) and 16th  (Ben King, 2:23 behind).

Upcoming schedule

The under-23 men's time trial is the opening competition in the UCI Road World Championships getting underway in Geelong, near Melbourne. It was followed on the first day by the women's competition.

The elite men's time trial race is scheduled for Thursday (Australia time, which is 14 to 18 hours ahead of time zones in the US). The road race events are under-23, Friday; elite women, Saturday; and elite men, Sunday. See the US roster at “Farrar, King and Phinney among US cyclists competing at Worlds.”
