People in Andover, Massachusetts, aren't surprised anymore when they see Garth Lockhart riding around on his bicycle with the front wheel in the air.
The 30-year-old native of the West Indies is in training to pop a wheelie and ride it down the road and right into the Guinness Book of World Records.
He'll attempt the feat on Sept. 12 by riding his mountain bike along Route 28 from his home in Andover to a bike shop in Salem 9 miles away.
The BostonHerald.com reports that the current bike wheelie record is 8 miles, held by a 14-year-old who accomplished the feat earlier this year in a gymnasium.
Although Lockhart will have to deal with wind, traffic, potholes or whatever else may be in his way, it sounds like he's ready to meet the challenge. Lately he's been making the Salem trip about three times a day by bicycle. He told BostonHerald that he spends 90% of his riding time in a wheelie and once held a wheelie for more than 14 miles.
Lockhart said that he didn't start popping wheelies until he was 21. Lately, kids around town started asking him how long he could ride a wheelie on his mountain bike, so he started seeing how far he could go.
He's still working on the details with Guinness about what he needs — judges, videotapes, etc — to prove the record.
Good luck, Garth.
