LiveStrong Challenge faces Seattle's hills and weather

More than 900 members of the LiveStrong army took to the streets in Seattle and the hilly Eastside on Sunday to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

It was the second year in a row that the charity bike ride visited Seattle to raise funds.

Many participants wore the LiveStrong, Mellow Johnny or Fat Cyclist jerseys and seemed reluctant to cover them up with rain gear as a light drizzle — that developed into a steady rain later in the day — fell on the course.

All the bicycle riders started at the Seattle Center near the Space Needle on Sunday morning and took off on rides of 10, 45, 70 or 100 miles.

The longest route led the riders across the I-90 bike path over Lake Washington, around Mercer Island, up and over hills in south Bellevue and Newcastle, and out rural roads all the way south to Tiger Mountain Road and north to a loop around Lake Sammamish. The hardest climb of the day over Cougar Mountain began at about mile 70, then the riders finished with a flat ride around the south end of Lake Washington and back into downtown Seattle.

Live music is provided at the LiveStrong Village finish area at Fisher Pavilion.

This is a well-provisioned ride with so-called Power Stops every 10 or 15 miles. Motorcycle escorts, SAG vehicles and bicycle volunteers complete the support crews.

LiveStrong Challenge rides are scheduled later in the year in San Jose (July 10-11), Philadelphia (Aug. 21-22) and Austin (Oct. 22-24).
