Painted cyclists, Bike Snob and Livestrong in Seattle this weekend

Naked bicycle riders, bike snob devotees and the Livestrong Army converge on Seattle this weekend for bike parades, book signings and a massive anti-cancer charity bike ride.

Partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 60s or 70s Temperatures in the low 60s with a high chance of precipitation will greet bicyclists this weekend. The warmish forecast must be appreciated by the Painted Cyclists at the Fremont Solstice Parade on Saturday.

The cyclists covered in paint — and little else — are a long-standing highlight of the parade sponsored by the Fremont Arts Council. Although most people attending the parade expect to see cyclists enjoying a ride without clothing, organizers caution the cyclists to show a little discretion:

“The Fremont Solstice Parade is a family friendly event. Of course, folks expect the painted cyclists, but they may not want your junk in their kid's face. Use good judgment when interacting with spectators.”

The job of painting all the cyclists runs from about 7 to 11 a.m. at Hale's Ales in Ballard; the group will then ride through Ballard to the parade start in Fremont.

Bike Snob

Also Saturday, self-described bike snob Eben Weiss is rolling through Seattle on a book-signing tour across the western US.

Weiss is the author of the humorous BikeSnobNYC.com blog; he's promoting his new book, “Bike Snob, Systematically & Mercilessly Realigning the World of Cycling.”

He'll be visiting the University of Washington Bookstore for a short talk and book-signing beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. The bookstore is located at 4326 University Way NE, Seattle. His next stop is Powell's City of Books in Portland on Sunday.

As the book-signing is the only thing on his official agenda in Seattle, Paul Andrews at Bike Intelligencer is trying to round him up for a burrito run up to the Greenwood neighborhood after he's done at the bookstore.

Livestrong

While Lance Armstrong is recovering from the Tour de Suisse on Sunday, a charity bike ride that bears his name will be riding through Seattle and over the eastside hills. Armstrong tweeted:

“Bummed to miss the @livestrong challenge in Seattle but looking forward to Philly in August. Thx all and be safe!”

This is the second year that the Livestrong Challenge has visited Seattle. Once again, the Livestrong Village will set up on Saturday on the grounds of the Seattle Center, followed by a series of bike rides that will depart on Sunday morning.

Livestrong is offering options of 10, 45, 70 and 100-mile rides. The longer rides take in Mercer Island, Lake Sammamish and Tiger Mountain routes on the Eastside. The 100-mile course is hilly.

Other Livestrong rides in 2010 are in Philadelphia, San Jose and Austin.
