An Australian's interrupted TransAmerica bicycle tour

Here's an emotional video from a cross-country bike rider whose journey didn't go exactly as planned. Not that many long-distance bicycle trips do. That's part of the adventure.

But this is an experience that Australian Janeen McCrae, aka Noodle, doubtedly could have done without. As she explains in her video:

“I was riding my bicycle across America. I was having such a good time. Then I wasn't riding my bicycle across America. I was in a ditch.”

A couple of weeks ago, very early in her coast-to-coast bicycle trip to raise $4,262 for Team Fatty and Livestrong — $1 per mile — she suffered a crash. She was on a downhill between Ashland and Charlottesville, Virginia, felt her trailer begin to fishtail, lost control and landed in a ditch.

Recovering

She doesn't remember the ditch part, however. Apparently she was unconcious for a couple of hours and doesn't remember much until she was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Right now she's back in New York and recovering from a broken wrist, some cuts on her face and overall soreness.

You can read about her happy departure and early days on the TransAmerica bicycle route at her well-constructed and interesting No Direction Known blog. There's also the video where she battles to hold it together while talking about the value of the Livestrong organization and her crash. I'm sure she'll write more as she gets underway.

As of that last video, however, she still plans to continue on her journey as soon as she heals in about a month. She's going to start at the point were she crashed. Good for her. We hope she fulfills her dreams.
