The wait is over for anyone wanting a set of bicycle maps to explore the length of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Range.
The cartographers at Adventure Cycling Association finished dotting the cities and crossing the intersections on the 2,389-mile Sierra Cascade Bicycle Route and the results are back from the printers.
The bike route from Sumas, Washington, to Tecate, California, is available on a set of five maps that went on sale Friday at the Adventure Cycling website.
They run $11.75 each for members ($14.75 for nonmembers). The whole set costs $51.25 ($6.75 nonmembers).
Sneak peek
More than 200 bicycle enthusiasts showed up for a sneak peek at a couple of the maps earlier this month when the route was unveiled in Seattle.
It was joy to see the maps, not only because of their wonderful presentation but also for the potential of adventure they contain. They're printed on durable stock and also contain information about where to find food, lodging and bike shops.
The maps are the first in the non-profit's catalogue covering 40,000 miles that were created on a geographical information system. Other improvements include North always located in the scale bar, shaded relief, lettered turns and distances to 1/10ths of a mile.
Tioga Pass
Anything but a direct north-south route, the route follows paved roads back and forth over the Pacific Crest — 30 times. The highest crossing is Tioga Pass at Yosemite National Park at 9,945 feet.
The route also passes through the North Cascades National Park, Crater Lake National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, and Sequoia National Park. It passes by Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood and other scenic, volcanic peaks.
Another north-south route — the Pacific Coast route enables bicyclists to create loop rides when combined with crossroads of the Northern Tier, TransAmerica, Western Express and Southern Tier bicycle routes.
