Getting ready for the 2010 Bike to Work events

Bellevue commute stationMay is 2010 National Bike Month and advocates want to put more bicyclists on the streets than ever before, especially during Bike to Work Week, May 17-21, and Bike to Work Day, May 21.

In the Puget Sound region, that means preparatory classes and get-togethers about bicycle commuting, contest challenges, and post-event parties and presentation celebrations.

The Cascade Bicycle Club's goal is to surpass last year's record 24,000 bike commuters in the region.

To check on what's happening in cities around the US, check the League of American Bicyclists' state-by-state event calendar for National Bike Month. Bike to Work events planned in Washington state:

Seattle area

In the Seattle area, online registration is open through the end of April for the Group Health Commute Challenge. Anyone who commutes just five times during the month of May is eligible for prizes. Cyclists can register as a member of a team or individually. Team captains meet for beer from 5 to 8 p.m. May 6 at The Pike Brewery.

Music and complimentary bike fits will be provided at the UW Trail Party on the Burke-Gilman Trail between University Avenue and Brooklyn from 4 to 7 p.m. May 13.

On Bike to Work Day, May 21, 44 commute stations will be open from 6 to 9 a.m. all around the region. A bicycle rally is scheduled for 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. at Seattle City Hall, 600 4th St.


Bike to Work Day winds down with the After Party from 4 to 7 p.m. May 21 in Ballard, where 22nd St. NW between Market Street and Ballard Avenue (at Bergen Place Park) will be closed off for a bike party. Local musicians will be on hand, along with food booths and bike services.

Elsewhere in Washington

Bellevue

The City of Bellevue is offering a bike commuting class from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE. On Bike to Work Day, commute stations will be open at the Commuter Connection at the Bellevue Transit Center at NE 6th between 108th and 110th avenues, and at the entrance to the Mercer Island Bridge on I-90 at SE 34th.

Bellingham/Whatcom County

Team Up and everybodyBike offers goals and prizes for bicycle commuters during May, National Bike Month. Important dates to remember are Adaptive Cycles Expo, May 15; Bike Swap, May 15; Women Only Bike Maintenance Class, May 18; and Bike to Work and School Day, May 21. More than 30 bike commuter stations will be open throughout the county on Bike to Work Day

Olympia

Sign up in April to participate in the Intercity Transit's Bicycle Commuter Contest in May. Also stop by one of the three bike stops listed at the Bike to Work Day website on Friday, May 21.

Snohomish County

The Community Transit Bike Commute Challenge begins May 17 and runs through June 18. A Bike to Work kick-off party is 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 29 at the Everett Public Schools' Longfellow Annex located on 3715 Oakes Avenue, Everett. Bike to Work Day in May 21.

Spokane

Bike to Work Spokane is encouraging bike commuters to register for Bike to Work Week to exceed last year's 1,500 bike commuters. The Commute Challenge runs from May 16 to June 12. Check the website for events such as the Education Fair at River Park Square, Pancake Breakfast, Walk and Roll School Day, energizer stations, and the May 21 wrap-up party.

Tacoma/Pierce County

Bike commuters in the Tacoma area can register for Bike to Work Week and log their miles to be eligible for prizes and a commuter picnic and fashion show. Check out PierceTripsCalendar to sign up. The county is aiming to surpass last year's total of 8,000 miles logged.
