Organizers of the 2010 Tour of California announced on Tuesday the 16 pro cycling teams that will compete in the 5th annual week-long race that rolls out from May 16 – 23.
All the usual suspects are here, including top US teams RadioShack, HTC-Columbia, Garmin-Transitions, and BMC Racing.
Because the California race organizers moved the event from February to May, many of the teams will be splitting their squads between the Tour of California and the three-week Giro d'Italia which runs at the same time.
RadioShack was not invited to the Giro, so its stars Lance Armstrong and defending champ Levi Leipheimer are expected to compete in California in May.
US sprinter Mark Cavendish of HTC-Columbia will be racing in California, as will BMC Racing's George Hincapie.
Andrew Messisk, president of race presenter AEG Sports, is quoted in the press release:
“These teams, with the riders we expect to compete, represent the one of the strongest fields we have had at the Amgen Tour of California. Our move to May means that we will have Tour de France contenders in prime form racing here in the Golden State. We also are pleased to have a selection of top North American-based Continental teams, who will have a chance to compete with some of the world’s best riders.”
