You better start practicing your bicycle jousting skills, your two-wheeled balance and your good humor as the New Belgium Brewery's Urban Assault Rides are coming to 13 cities in 2010.
Essentially, a two-person team sets out to visit 11 checkpoints around town to complete a challenge at each location. There's no route. The team to complete all 11 obstacles in the shortest time wins.
Three cities have been added to the Urban Assault Ride tour in 2010. The 13 are:
Tucson — April 18
Berkeley — May 2
Seattle — May 16
Portland — May 23
Austin — May 27
Charlotte — June 20
Fort Collins — July 18
Denver — July 25
Minneapolis — Aug. 8
St. Louis — Aug. 18
Des Moines — Aug. 22
Chicago — Sept. 12
Madison — Sept. 26
Not surprisingly, all Urban Assault contests are accompanied by a beer party that starts about 11 a.m. and wraps up long after the last team rolls in. You don't have to ride to party. Proceeds benefit local Urban Assault Ride charities.
The brewery provides everything you'll need at the challenges. The picture at top is the jousting contest in Seattle a couple of years ago; New Belgium provided the bikes and the jousting poles. At right is the human wheelbarrow.
New contests this year include human bowling, bike polo, and a twist on paper boy.
If you want to participate, registration is online at the Urban Assault Ride website. New Belgium is capping participation at 1,500 riders in each city. There will be prizes.
