Plans to start 2012 Giro d'Italia in Washington DC

As strange as it may seem, a move is afoot to bring the Giro d'Italia bike race to Washington DC in 2012.

The Giro characteristically has begun the 3-week bike race for a few days in other countries before relocating to Italy for the bulk of the miles. Same with the Tour de France.

The 2010 Giro, for instance, will start in Amsterdam on May 8. The 2010 Tour de France begins in Rotterdam and doesn't reach France until Stage 4.

But never before has one of these races included a TransAtlantic flight as part of the race.

Juliet Macur at the New York Times reports that the Giro and Washington DC officials have a tentative agreement in “Planning detour in US, Giro director takes a big risk.” Right now they're considering the first two stages in the US.

Giro race director Angelo Zomegnan says he's already taken into account the logistics of moving about 200 bike racers, as well as their support crews and bicycles, across five time zones.

Let's hope he doesn't plan to use commercial carriers: Just consider the damage to the bikes.
