It's always gratifying to learn that your hometown is making progress toward bicycle friendliness.
That's why I was happy to learn that Bellevue, Washington, has joined Seattle and Redmond by opening a bike station. It's housed inside Bellevue's Commute Connection at the Transit Center on Sixth Street.
That Commute Connection “store” is where commuters can learn about options to driving solo to work or errands. Staff is on-site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily through the winter to assist in planning commute trips by bike, bus, and car- or van-pool.
The highlight for me is the secure indoor parking at the site for 27 bicycles, accessible 24 hours a day to members with a cardkey. Lockers for small items also are available, as are private restrooms.
The membership costs $50 for six months, in addition to a $10 refundable deposit.
Through March, a mechanic is on-duty from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. Check with Pedal Dynamics to make a reservation.
In a video posted on YouTube, Michael Ingram, senior planner of the Bellevue Transportation Department, says the city government knows it has to encourage people to abandon their drive-alone commuting habits.
This bike station certainly goes a long way to making bike commuting a more convenient option.
