New Lance Armstrong book: Excerpt, TV and personal appearances

“Comeback 2.0: Up Close and Personal” is the story of Lance Armstrong's return to professional cycling in 2009.

The story is told in his own journal entries interspersed throughout the book with color photos by Liz Kreutz, who followed Armstrong throughout the 2009 season.

The 208-page book will be released on Tuesday and will be followed by book signings and TV appearances by Armstrong.

In an introduction written by Armstrong, the 7-time Tour de France champion tells what led him back onto the saddle after three years of retirement.

Excerpt

In an excerpt from the introduction, Armstrong writes that in 2008, he found himself watching the Tour de France coverage on Versus in the mornings before a LiveStrong cancer summit meeting in Columbus, Ohio:

“What got to me was watching the stage when they climbed Alpe d'Huez. I have history with Alpe d'Huez. Good history. Most notably when I won a Stage 16 time trial there that was critical to my 2004 Tour victory.

“As I watched Carlos Sastre make his move on Alpe d'Huez, a move that went essentially unchallenged, I felt a pang: I want back in. It was the first time I'd even considered a return to the Tour de France. I can't say that I decided right then and there to mount a comeback, but the seed was planted. In the days and weeks that followed, it was on my mind. Increasingly on my mind.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

Appearances

Armstrong will be appearing at book signings and on at least two TV shows to promote the book.

He's scheduled to appear on “Live with Regis and Kelly” on Wednesday (check your local listings for the time. I believe it's on the ABC network.).

Also, the LiveStrong Twitter reports he'll be interviewed by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show on Wednesday night.

His book signing schedule:

— 7 p.m . Monday, Nov. 30: Bookends, 232 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, NJ;

— 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1: Barnes & Noble – Lincoln Triangle, 1972 Broadway at 66th Street, New York City;

— 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2: Borders Books – Penn Station, 2 Penn Plaza, New York City.

Photographer Liz Kreutz is unable to join him on these book promotions as she and her husband just had a baby boy right before Thanksgiving. Best wishes to them.
