Cadbury Canada brought together two of my favorite things — chocolate and bikes — in a promotion to do some good in Africa.
The chocolate maker is sending 5,000 bikes to central and southern Ghana where they'll give people access to schools, medical care and local markets.
Chocaholics participated in the bike donation by converting their Cadbury purchases into bicycle parts at The Bicycle Factory website. Consumers entered UPC codes from their chocolate purchases to “create” bicycle parts.
Each UPC equaled a bicycle part. It took 100 parts to build a bicycle. The bikes are equipped with a single gear and mud guards, a basket for carrying books and supplies and a rear seat to help carry little brothers and sisters.
Cadbury is using the help of the Bicycling Empowerment Network Namibia to ensure the proper distribution of the bikes. People will be trained in each community to build and maintain the bikes. They'll be disseminated primarily to families whose children walk at least 2 miles to school each day.
Company executives say Ghana has supplied much of the cocoa used in Cadbury products for more than 100 years.
I hope Cadbury extends this promotion to the US next time. My family and I certainly would have done our part to get some bicycles built.
By the way, I love that commercial.
