Kristin Armstrong of the US won her second World Championship in the individual time trial on Wednesday, following up on her gold medal performance at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The 36-year-old from Boise scorched the 26-mile 16.6-mile bike route in 35:26 minutes, beating rival Noemi Cantele of Italy by 55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Australia's Jack Bobridge, a 20-year-old member of the South Australian/AIS bike racing squad, became the under-23 individual time trial champion.

Both individual time trial races are part of the UCI Road World Championships going on through Sunday at Mendrisio, Switzerland. The men's elite cyclists race on Thursday.

Armstrong first won the World's individual time trial in 2006. She finished 5th last year, after bringing home the gold from the Olympics. She currently races for the Cervelo TestTeam.

CyclingNews reported that she'll wrap up her competitive career on Sunday with the women's road bike race portion of the championships. She plans to take up a management position with a team of developing US cyclists.

Bobridge

Bobridge distinguished himself early this year at the Tour Down Under by launching numerous escapes and finishing 4th in the King of the Mountain competition. Since that time he's earned three championships in Austrialia: National Individual Pursuit, Under-23 National Road Race, and Under-23 National Time Trial.

He's been signed to race for Garmin-Slipstream for the 2010-2012 seasons. New teammate Christian Vande Velde quipped on Twitter: “Congratulations to Jack Bobridge for his win at the World U23 TT Champs. Jacky Bobby is a bad man.”

CyclingNews remembers that Bobridge got props from Lance Armstrong during the Tour Down Under. He called Bobridge a future talent.

Tejay Vangarderen of Superior, Colo., was the highest placed US cyclist in the ITT, finishing in 13th place, 1:25 behind Bobridge.
