Eight years ago this morning we watched a terrible event unfold that would bring profound changes to our nation and its foreign policies.
There are several bicycle rides that remember 9/11 and memorialize those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Here are three in New York, North Carolina and Kentucky.
The Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride that began in 2002 when about a dozen bicyclists, mostly NYPD officers, rode their bikes from the Pentagon in the Washington DC to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan.
This year's ride comprises about 170 bike riders who will leave on Friday from Boston, the departure point of the airliners in the attacks, and make a 260-mile tour that ends at Ground Zero on Monday. All money raised in the tour goes to the families of officers who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Hope
In North Carolina, the 9/11 Hope for the Warriors Ride brings together combat-wounded veterans together for a three-day ride on rehabilitative bicycles. According to the website:
This ride is a celebration of the strength and resolve of our combat
wounded, and a promise that their sacrifices will never be forgotten,
nor their needs unmet. By participating in this challenging event,
these wounded heroes demonstrate that they are defined not by their
injury, but by their sense of determination.
The event wraps up a community event on Oak Island on Saturday. (Read more at Star News Online.)
Week of Giving
In Kentucky, the Lexington-Fayette County fire fighters and their families have been involved in a Week of Giving to remember of the 9/11 attacks. One of the events is a 91.1-mile bicycle relay through Fayette County with the police department.
