It's not uncommon to find wide varieties of sports supplements and high-tech training gadgets hawked at major bicycling events.
But a journalist for the Des Moines Register stumbled across a truly unique device for sale at an expo booth in Council Bluffs for the kickoff of RAGBRAI over the weekend.
Called FUDS — short for female urination devices, the product allows women to answer the call of nature just as men do, by standing up.
The funnel-shaped, silicon devices are sold by GoGirl, whose slogan is “Don't take life sitting down.”
You can use your imagination to figure out how they work, or you can check out “what is GoGirl?” at the company website.
Here's what the GoGirl website says about its use:
“Dispose of it after use. Or clean and reuse as you like. (Urine is sterile, but the product can come into contact with contaminates during use, so take precautions when cleaning.) Our patented splash guard eliminates messing and spilling. Once you practice a time or two, using a GoGirl is going to feel like second nature. You won’t be like a man. You’ll just pee like one.”
It's certainly a product that answers a need for about half the cycling population. No wonder the GoGirl booth sold all 200 devices that day.
I'm always relieved that I can usually take care of business standing up in porta-potties on well-attended bicycle rides. And no squatting for me when there aren't any restrooms around; I can just go stand behind a tree.
My wife, however, thinks it's kind of yucky to carry around a used FUD. Any product feedback?
