Painted bicyclists ride in Seattle neighborhood

Temperatures in the low 60s didn't deter Painted Bicyclists at Fremont Solstice Parade on Saturday.

Keeping warm under 8 ounces of body paint, the cyclists celebrated the first day of summer along with thousands of onlookers who jammed the parade route in the Seattle neighborhood of Fremont.

Although a few wore a strategically placed loincloth or pasty, most only wore their paint. While some just covered themselves in one color from head-to-toe, others painted themselves in elaborate wardrobes or costumes.

It's a lot of work, and many showed up at Hale's Ale for the painting to begin at 7 a.m. The parade didn't start until noon.

It's all in good fun, and the crowd cheered their approval as the cyclists rode past.

There's more to the parade, sponsored on the summer solstice every year by the Fremont Arts Council, but the painted cyclists are the only ones on bicycles.

Plenty of police were around, and none seemed interested in issuing tickets.

Local Fremont residents were in charge of the crosswalks and traffic control — this might be the only place where you'll see a guy wearing a tu-tu over his fishnet body suit directs traffic through an intersection.

Still on tap is the World Naked Bike Ride in Seattle which is scheduled for July 11. The plan is to meet up at Louisa Boren Park at about 10 a.m. and take off for the ride at around 1 p.m. The ride will be about 7 miles. Check out the World Naked Bike Ride Seattle group for details.
