Bicycle thefts on college campuses can be frequent and commonplace, but I've been surprised this year by some of those held responsible.
First was the case of the University of South Florida dean whose involvement in a bicycle theft at the campus hospital was caught on tape. The dean, who earned $384,000 a year, is shown on tape helping his handyman take the bike.
Now, Washington State University in Pullman has suspended two freshmen football players from team activities after they were arrested in connection with bicycle thefts from a dormitory.
Witnesses told police the pair took a hacksaw from a house being remodeled and saw them use it to take bicycles from a dormitory. The four were later arrested and the bicycles were located at their shared residence, reports CougFan.
The Seattle Times says the two freshman safeties were arrested on several counts of theft and burglary and spent the night at the Whitman County jail in Colfax.
Were they supplementing their scholarships?
Apparently WSU has had earlier problems with its Cougar football team. This Times story from June 2008 says that in the previous 18 months, 25 players have been arrested or charged with offenses that carry possible jail time.
