Celebrate bicycles at Summer Streets in Alki on Sunday

Here's a welcome sign for pedestrians and bicyclists: Street closed to traffic on Sunday.

Alki Avenue along the beach in West Seattle is reserved for people on bicycles and on foot this Sunday.

Cars and trucks will be banned on the usually busy street that runs beside Alki Beach. Instead, visitors can see stunt bike shows, bicycle art and maintenance booths, a kids' bike parade and more.

Getting there

If you're going, I'd recommend riding your bicycle or taking the water taxi, or both.

On Friday I bicycled across from Seattle along the Spokane Street bike route with the help of new-found biking buddy Andy. We took East Marginal Street south to the signs for the bike path along the Spokane Street bridge. Going slow, as the path crossed some side streets and Spokane Street, we finally made it over to the bike path on the south side of the Spokane Street Bridge.

Seattle view from taxiComing back, we returned on the $3 King County Water Taxi that left from Seacrest Park in West Seattle and dropped us off at Pier 55 in Seattle. There was plenty of room for bikes on Friday, and we could have used this for a round trip. Here's a link for the water taxi schedule.

Summer Streets

The Alki Avenue Summer Streets is one of about a dozen street fairs presented by the city and a host of sponsors this summer.

It gets runs between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday and gets started with 5K run/walk.

Cascade Bicycle Club, a major participant in the event, is offering bike maintenance demos, helmet sales, advocacy information, and a Bike Blender demo.

Professional mountain bike stunt rider Ryan Leech will perform between 12:30-1 p.m. There also are bike rodeos, skateboarding and mini-bike championship events.

Throughout the day, West Seattle businesses will offer sidewalk shopping and dining opportunities. See the schedule of events.
