Car-free days for bicycling along Lake Washington Boulevard in Seattle return this Sunday, but the event is better than ever this year.
Renamed as Bicycle Sundays, the event is scheduled on 19 Sundays from May through September this year. That's every Sunday except July 5, 26, and August 2.
In previous years, the lake-side road was closed to cars two or three times a month on alternate Saturdays and Sundays. This year the city upped the ante to just about every Sunday.
Times
On Bike Sundays, Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed to motor vehicles between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park. The closure hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This is a great family bicycling destination, with parking available on surrounding streets and at Seward and Mount Baker Beach parks. It's also a friendly stretch of road for those bicycling a loop around Lake Washington.
In addition, Cascade Bicycle Club volunteers will be fitting and selling $10 bicycle helmets from 1-4 p.m. at Stan Sayres Park.
Ciclovia
This year's sponsors are Seattle Parks and Recreation, Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation, Seattle Climate Action NOW and Seattle Summer Streets.
The Bicycle Sundays program is just one of the streets closures set up this summer as part of Seattle Summer Streets. See the ever-expanding summer street schedule.
The Summer Streets and Bicycle Sundays program are patterned after the Latin American street-closing events known as ciclovias. Similar events are underway in other US cities, among them Chicago, New York and Miami.
City planners and bicycle/pedestrian professionals might be interested in tuning into a webinar session on holding Sunday Parkways at BikeWalk.org. The cost is $60.
