Crime prevention meeting for Seattle bike commuters

The Cascade Bicycle Club is taking an active role in attempting to curb a rash of attacks and robberies near the bike tunnel in Sam Smith Park in Seattle.

The club will hold a “safety-information fair” from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday in the park west of the I-90 tunnel in Mount Baker.

Cascade is discussing the problem with police and suggests that bicyclists wait up for other bike commuters before riding through the area.

The tunnel (above in a photo I shot in August 2007) is the easiest and most direct route between Seattle and the Eastside. It links with the bike path along the I-90 bridge on the east and to Sam Smith Park and the south of downtown area in the west.

There have at least six crimes involving bicyclists in that area in the past year; at least one occurred in the tunnel itself.

Then last week, an evening commuter was pulled off his bicycle, robbed, and beaten by two masked men on the bike path in the park. On Tuesday, another commuter avoided an apparent robbery when he turned his bike around when two men blocked his path.

There's a discussion about the problem at the Cascade forum. Read more about the Tuesday meeting on the Cascade newsletter.
