Salsa Bicycles is recalling 8,600 faulty handlebar stems after receiving three reports that they broke or cracked under normal use.
The handlebar stems were sold as individual aftermarket items and installed on bicycles from November 2007 to December 2008.
Salsa requests that consumers stop using bikes equipped with the CroMoto S.U.L. handlebar stem and return the bikes to dealers for free inspection and replacement.
The CroMoto S.U.L. handlebar stems, painted black, were sold individually between March and December 2008 for $60 to $65. The stems were also used on its Ala Carte, El Mariachi, Casseroll Triple, Casseroll Single and La Cruz bicycles. Those stems were painted the same color as the bicycle.
Visit the company's CroMoto Stem website for details about model numbers of bikes involved in the recall.
Salsa is a subsidiary of Quality Bicycle Products of Bloomington, Minn. The parts were manufactured in Taiwan.
