The effort to install and maintain bicycle lanes and build bike paths around Mountain View, California, has paid off with a renewal of its “Bicycle Friendly Community” designation.
The League of American Bicyclists announced the city at the south end of San Francisco Bay will keep its bronze level award.
The bike league cites continued work by the city on improving and extending the Stevens Creek Trail, shown here with a “bicycle posse” posing for a photo on flickr.com at Lee Comma Dennis.
Also, 100% of the city's arterials have bicycle lanes.
The city also boasts a high number of bicycle commuters, a 52-space bike shelter at a downtown transit center, and programs for children, Safe Routes to School and Bike to Work day events, city officials told Bay City News.
Mountain View first received the bronze award in 2004; it was renewed in 2006. The San Francisco 'burb is one of nearly 100 designated bicycle friendly communities in the US.
Information on other Bicycle Friendly Communities and how to start your town on the path toward that award is available at League of American Bicyclists.
