Phil Keoghan is getting real with an amazing bicycle tour this spring.

The host of “The Amazing Race” reality TV show is embarking from Los Angeles on March 28 for a cross-country bicycle tour to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The MS Society has chosen the bicycle as a successful form of fund-raising. The non-profit sponsors more than 100 one- to two-day charity bicycle rides around the US every year. Combined, the rides raise about $65 million annually.

Keoghan, who lives in New Zealand, says he'll ride about 100 miles a day and hopes that people along the route will join in. A website — Phil Rides Across America — will track his route and his whereabouts.

In a press release, Keoghan said:

“I feel like where we're at in the economy, the bicycle is a pretty good solution to helping people's waistlines, wallets and the environment. This is saying to people, look, it's time to make a choice in your life. We have way too much obesity and way too many people sitting back and not getting involved in life.”

Does he mean there are too many people watching reality TV while the real world passes by?

Keoghan has a cousin who is afflicted with multiple sclerosis.

Among the 30 cities that Keoghan will pass through on his way to New York City on May 9 are Las Vegas; Denver; Lincoln, Neb.; Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh; Washington; Baltimore; Philadelphia; and New York.

Charity athletic events raise more than $2 billion annually for many causes. A large percentage of that comes from bicycling events.
