Last year's sunny blue skies aren't expected to make a repeat performance at the 2009 Chilly Hilly bike ride that kicks off the Puget Sound area recreational cycling season on Sunday.

It might be sunny on Friday, but the weather forecast for Bainbridge Island on Sunday is flat-out rain.

I hope the forecasters are wrong on that, but I'll suggest reattaching fenders, tightening up the brakes a bit, and digging out the Gor-Tex raingear. Probably take along an extra pair of gloves and maybe wool socks.

Pre-registration for the 33-mile ride presented by the Cascade Bicycle Club is long closed; onsite registration is available in the area of the Bainbridge Ferry terminal in Seattle. Cost is $35 ($5 discount with Cascade membership.)

Ferry times (the ferry ride is included in the cost of the bike ride) are 7:55, 8:45, 9:35, and 10:35. You're free to return on any ferry (eastbound is always free). Early and mid afternoon times are: 12:20 p.m., 1:10, 2:05, 2:55, 3:50, and 4:55 p.m. See Bainbridge Ferry schedule. Be warned: You may have to wait in line for more than one ferry.
