Apparently George W. Bush won't be the only former president who rides a bicycle when he leaves office next week.
Jimmy Carter also rides a bicycle. At least he did until his and former First Lady Rosalynn's bicycles were stolen recently from the Carter Center in Atlanta.
The Carters received the bicycles a couple of years ago from Peter Wicker, the owner of Outback Bikes in Atlanta. At the time, the couple had sent in their old bicycles for repair and Wicker said they weren't much more than “rolling junk,” reported the Atlanta Constitution.
Bike commuting
Carter was always known for being energy conscious; he once urged Americans to turn down their home thermostats. So he and Rosalyn took to riding bicycles to get around the Carter Center and adjoining Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, which covers 37 acres.
Wicker and his wife thought the former president and Nobel Prize winner deserved something better, so he gave them both Specialized Globe bikes, which sell for about $1,000 apiece.
Now he says those bikes probably went for a “$10 rock of crack.”
It will be interesting to see if the Secret Service has any more luck in recovering stolen bicycles than local police do.
