“I just don't want to get clobbered too bad. … I don't have any illusions of grandeur. … I hope I get in the race and get re-acclimated to the tempo and the speed and what it is like to be around 200 guys in a fast-moving group.”
Lance Armstrong touched down in Sydney, Australia, to a gaggle of reporters after training for several weeks in Hawaii. He answered questions at the airport for a few minutes before heading out for the departure to Adelaide.
Adelaide is the home base for the Tour Down Under. There's an evening classic race on Sunday; the TDU starts in earnest two days later on Jan. 20.
Officials are expecting a lot of attention for Armstrong. Adelaide's Advertiser newspaper said Armstrong and his entourage would have the services of a dedicated police motorcyclist, an unmarked car and two patrol vehicles for his training rides.
The airport 2:30-minute interview is recorded on ABC Grandstand.
So is Armstrong being coy with his answer, or is he really just using the Tour Down Under to ease back into cycling. We'll finally get to find out in a week.
