This photo I shot on the Foothills Trail in Pierce County, Washington, makes me feel warm all over.

It's a hot June day and that's the volcano Mount Rainier soaring in the background.

I just posted this rail-to-trail photo, and a couple of others, to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy group on flickr.com

There already are more than 300 photos in the group of people riding their bicycles on rail-trails all across the US.

Photo group

It shouldn't be too difficult to find photos for this group; there are more than 1,500 rail-trails in the US with nearly 800 more in the works. The longest is the Katy Trail, stretching some 225 miles across Missouri.

If you have some time and you want to see some amazing American scenery, you should browse through the group. You might get some ideas about where to bike your next vacation.

If you have some rail-trail photos to share, go ahead and post them.

Flooding

The Foothill Trail runs for about 17 miles generally from South Prairie, through Orting, and nearly to Puyallup. It's the abandoned railbed of the old Burlington Northern Railway, abandoned in 1982. It's a work in progress, as there are more connections to be made. You can learn more at Foothills Coalition website or Pierce County Parks website.

This photo was shot during the Tour de Pierce bike ride, a happier time for the area as it has been hit by high water in the past week.

I've read that Orting is one of the many towns in western Washington to suffer devastating flooding, along with the STP stop-over town of Chehalis.

Let's wish everyone the best, and that they can return soon to enjoy their trail.
