See “11 bicycle wall calendars for 2011 that run that gamut from erotic to exotic”
As we roll into the end of 2008, it might be a good time to check out some bicycle-themed calendars for 2009.
Of all the offerings, one of the most popular — at least for browsing — is the Cycle Passion 2009 calendar produced in Germany. The calendar offers photos of professional female cyclists unencumbered by typical cycling garb.
Other calendars feature Seattle's legion of women cyclists, legendary mountain biker Jacquie Phelan, bike culture expressed in exotic locales, and the annual cycling scenery masterpiece by Graham Watson.
That's Sabine Spitz, above, on the cover of next year's Cycle Passion calendar. Among her other accomplishments, the German cyclist was mountain bike champion at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (see the mountain bike on the floor behind her?).
Other models include Hanka Kupfernagel (Germany, 2008 Elite Women's Cyclo-Cross World Champion, Gold medal winner Olympics, Sydney); Irina Kalentieva (Russia, Beijing Olympic Bronze medallist, MTB World Champion 2007); Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesja (Norway, seven times MTB World Cup Champion); Willow Koerber (USA, 6th overall in the MTB World Cup 2007); Jennifer Hohl (Switzerland, Swiss MTB Champion 2008)
and Steffi Marth (Germany, MTB National 4 cross Champion 2007).
Check out the website to see the women posing in all 12 months. Calendars from 2008 and 2007 are also on sale, although I can't think why anyone would want to buy an out-of-date calendar.
Lovely Ladies
Another babes on bikes calendar is published in Seattle to benefit Bike Works and its earn-a-bike program. Entitled “Lovely Ladies on Beautiful Bikes,” the calendar features some of the Emerald City's many female cyclists riding their mountain and road bikes around town.
You can order the calendar online at Bike Calendar Girls 2009, or show up at the release party at 8 p.m., Dec. 12, at Conor Byrne Pub, 5140 Ballard Ave., NW, Seattle.
Jacquie Phelan
Another female cyclist, Jacquie Phelan, has a calendar coming out entitled Unmitigated Gal. A member of the US Bicycling Hall of Fame for her accomplishments in mountain biking, Phelan doesn't pose in cycling duds either. She's dressed “with aplomb, wit and in fabulous style” for each of the 12 months, according to the Riding Pretty blog.
You can see examples and purchase the Jacquie Phelan calendar online and keep up with her at the Jacquie Phelan blog. The proceeds go to Phelan, who is suviving cancer. She strikes a pose for the December picture above.
iBike
The International Bicycle Fund (iBike) calendar features photos of bicycle culture without borders, showing people riding their bicycles in Indonesia, Japan, Ghana and other locales. The 2009 Solidarity Calendar also has inspiring quotes and facts about bicycling.
They can be ordered at the Seattle-based International Bicycle Fund's website.
Graham Watson
One of the most scenic offerings is the Graham Watson 2009 Cycling Calendar, featuring his photos from the 2008 season. The 15-by-12-inch calendar has 40 photos, which is a good deal for a 12-month calendar. It's available at Amazon.com, see ad at right.
There are three other calendars below that are available at Amazon that might interest you. “Portraits of the Tour de France” uses vintage race photos, “Mountain Biking” shows people riding in rough terrain around the US, and “Cycling through History” features vintage bicycle posters.
