Help Kirkland, Bellevue and Renton review bicycle plans

About a year ago the Seattle city council endorsed a 10-year Bicycle Master Plan. Now three of its neighbors on the east side of Lake Washington are in the midst of reviewing bicycle plans for their communities.

Kirkland and Renton are looking for comments on their plans for active transportation at meetings Wednesday night. Bellevue will be reviewing a comprehensive plan, which will have an effect on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan.

The Cascade Bicycle Club is asking for citizen cyclists to show up at the those meetings to review the plans and “help them get it right.”

These cities appear to be making a good faith effort to provide upgrades for the bicycling on city streets. You can check out their efforts online and offer your suggestions at their meetings:

Kirkland

Non-Motorized Transportation Plan is working on several improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians, such as bike parking, marking detectors at traffic signals so that bicycle riders can find them, working on ways to keep sidewalks clear of obstructions and safety at crosswalks.

Meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 12) at Peter Kirk Room, Kirkland City Hall, 123 5th Avenue.

Renton

The Renton Trails & Master Plan Open House will give residents a chance to review and comment on bicycle route development in the city. According to project manager Dan Hasty:

“The City does not currently have a well-developed bicycle route system. This program will complete an integrated system of bicycle routes and trails and upgrade streets to better accommodate bicycles.

“Many locations along existing and potential routes have site-specific safety problems, which would be addressed in this program.  Additionally, there is a strong demand for better-developed non-motorized facilities in Renton.”

The city is using a $100,000 federal grant to identify and develop a ebicycle network.

The open house runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Renton Senior Activity Center, 211 Burnett Avenue North.

Bellevue

Bellevue has been reviewing and upgrading its Walk & Roll Pedestrian-Bike Plan for more than a year. Follow that link to check out the latest presentations and the Final Draft Ped-Bike Plan Policy Framework and Project List issued in September.

Cascade Bicycle Club says the Bellevue Planning Commission will be hearing comments on the comprehensive plan updates, which will effect the Ped-Bike Plan. Apparently changes have been proposed that could affect the Bridle Trails neighborhood.

Meeting at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 19, at Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE.
