Pro cyclist Tyler Farrar will lead a community bike ride around Wenatchee, Washington, on Sunday in support of his father, Dr. Ed Farrar, left.

Dr. Farrar is hospitalized with a spinal injury after being struck head-on by a car the morning of Oct. 22 while riding his bicycle to work. He's still listed in serious condition.

An orthopedic surgeon and cycling enthusiast, Dr. Farrar helped form Wenatchee Valley Velo and encourage many people to get into cycling as a form of rehabilitation and exercise. People in the community came up with the “Rally for Ed” to show their support.

The ride is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Wenatchee Center. It will take a ceremonial lap of the criterium course, pass the point of his accident on Skyline Drive, and end up near the Central Washington Hospital.

According to the ride announcement at Wenatchee Valley Velo:

“Ed has done so much to promote cycling as a healthy lifestyle choice, as a means to rehabilitate from injury, as a basis for strong community, as a competitive sport and for lifelong fitness.  He has also helped countless patients find the best in their lives after injury or accident.  Anyone who has ever known Ed understands his selfless passion for helping others realize a full and active life.

“Many have come forward wanting to do something for Ed and his family – to demonstrate their love support for them in this difficult time and also to highlight the issue of the safety of pedestrians, runners & cyclists on our roads.”

Early on, Dr. Farrar was inundated with flowers for well-wishers. The family now asked that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to the Wenatchee Valley Velo, PO Box 1991, Wenatchee, WA 98807.

Police report that the motorist drifted over the centerline when he took his eyes off the road to pick up a clipboard. He was cited for 2nd degree negligent driving, a civil violation with no jail time and a $500 fine.

Dr. Farrar's son, Tyler, rides for the US-based Garmin-Chipotle pro cycling team.
