Link to update: “Armstrong wins Tour de Gruene”
“When Lance Armstrong comes, it gets amazingly busy. It's kind of like running a golf tournament, and Tiger Woods shows up.”
— Will Rotzler, co-organizer of the Tour de Gruene in New Braunfels, Texas, population 51,000, interviewed by Herald-Zeitung newspaper.
Armstrong is racing this weekend at 25th Tour de Gruene, which also features 15, 30, and 40-mile recreational rides on Saturday morning. Many are calling it his return to road racing, although it's hardly a UCI-sanctioned race.
He'll race Saturday afternoon's 16-mile individual time trial along the Guadalupe River, and Sunday's 27-mile team time trial with friend John Korioth.
Armstrong previously raced Gruene in 1996 with Eddy Merckx shortly after his cancer diagnosis and 1997 with Kevin Livingston.
Meanwhile, Armstrong had an “exclusive interview” on Sunday with Road Bike Action magazine. He said he's more worried about getting in power training before his big rides next year, than working on endurace, which he says is easier to recover.
There's also Armstrong's “exclusive interview” with ESPN.com. (Apparently Armstrong is handing out exclusive interviews like Halloween candy.) He told Bonnie Ford that his comeback “isn't an attempt to address questions about whether he raced clean.”
Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy the Road Bike interview more. Much more geeky talk about pedals, TT positions, bikes, training, etc.
I'm a little surprised that his hometown newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman, hasn't scored any exclusive interviews with Armstrong as in years past. Then I remembered he's still p.o.'ed at the Statesman for running thos aerial photos of his ranch and telling how he was a biggest water consumer in Austin.
