This cycling video is the iconic testimonial to why it's not a good idea to celebrate too early. You've probably seen it dozens of times, but you've never seen this face on the come-from-behind winner until now.
It's such a classic and its message is so clear that the Obama-Biden campaign is using it to encourage supporters not to let up until after they cross the “finish line” on Tuesday.
I spotted it on Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC Wednesday night and got a good laugh. It's very appropriate. Here's what Matthews said about it:
“Have you ever seen a campaign that had enough time to create an ad to keep itself focused? Watch this number the Obama people created to keep them up, right to the finish line.
“The message is don't go hot-dogging it until you pass the goal line.”
Oops. Little bit of a mixed metaphor there.
The video was posted Tuesday at the Obama-Biden website on YouTube.com. The message says:
“We can't afford to slip up in the final days. Volunteer this weekend and into Election Day, November 4th, 2008.”
Bicycles have played a part in Obama's campaign before. There's his support for bicycling and alternative transportation in a rally in Portland and that bike ride he took along Lake Michigan after being assured of the nomination.
And who can forget “Barack Obama is your new bicycle”?
